I know, I know, this video isn’t about GW2 even though it is posted on a GW2 channel. See this video as a test-case, to see if you guys are interested in video’s on other games as well Let me know what you think in the comments, please!
Anyways, Path of Exile is a hack and slash adventure RPG, not unlike Diablo by Blizzard Entertainment. This game however is free to play, and didn’t quite go along with the changes Blizzard made to Diablo III. Path of Exile sticked more to the ways of Diablo II, but made it vastly more custimizable.
The game mechanics are pretty much the same. You are a becomming-hero, and you must hack and slash your way through thousands of enemies, while leveling up, gathering new random pieces of gear and downing a boss every now and then.
This game however is different in its customizability. Instead of getting skills from your class, you get skills from your gems that you put in gear. Those gems level up over time, and you can even put in magic spells when you are a fighter.
You can add effects by combining these gems, creating unlimited possibilities. This system reminds me of the way the materia system worked in Final Fantasy VII, with linking materia together.
Then come the passive skills, which can be distributed on a massive board. This again reminds me of Final Fantasy, but this time it is Final Fantasy X’s sphere grid. Again, unlimited possibilities!
The game is still in (OPEN) beta, so its not done yet. It has its flaws, as for example it doesn’t look quite as well as diablo. Text, minimaps etc look terrible – but those are minor flaws. The game crashes from time to time, but I guess they will fix it before final release.
Keep in mind though that even when the game goes out of beta, you keep your current character.
It’s free, so check it out if you find this interesting at www.pathofexile.com
